SPECIAL GUEST POST
Hello and welcome this week to an exciting adventure! This week we have a special treat from author Pheobe Darqueling and the release of her book Riftmaker!
Lyre Starling is the son of a prominent Excelsior Senator. Despite the prestige, he has no desire to follow in his father’s footsteps. There are too many rules, too much diplomacy involved in dealing with the other Senators, but there’s no real power in such a figurehead position. Lyre prefers to work behind the scenes with his uncle, Lord Corvid instead.
Officially, any Artefacts that find their way into his world from the other side of the rifts are illegal. Which makes them not just tantalizing, but irresistible. Due to his economic role in the city, Lord Corvid seeks them out with impunity, and Lyre has gained special favor with his uncle by getting him what he wants. But it’s far from a selfless act. Lyre has dark desires of his own, including his obsession with Corvid’s ward, Olivia. In the upper echelons of Excelsior society, it’s not unheard of for cousins to marry to keep their resources in the family, but Olivia has made her distaste for Lyre abundantly clear.
If he’s to achieve his heart’s desire, he’ll need to find a way to manipulate his situation. And Lyre’s learned manipulation from the best.
Here’s a little introduction to Lyre from Riftmaker.
“What’s the matter?” he purred into her ear. His lips were uncomfortably close to her earlobe as he breathed.
If I flinch, he scores.
Olivia stared straight ahead and rested her hands in her lap, his proximity made her itch to fetch her dueling foil. “I’ve asked you not to call me that,” she said silkily. “Seriously, Lyre. What’s going on?” Tina interjected. She was oblivious to the tension between her brother and her cousin. “Did you come to fetch me home?” He kept his face close to Olivia’s for another moment before straightening abruptly. Olivia let out a startled squeak in spite of herself and a smirk pulled at the corner of his mouth. One point for him.
“Yes and no, dear sister,” he said as he reached for a canapé. “You will be coming home with me soon. However, that was not the purpose of my errand.” He had been coming around more and more lately, and Olivia was sure it had something to do with her Uncle and the steady stream of otherworld Artefacts that flowed into her home. As long as his unctuousness was directed at her uncle rather than her, she was content. His proximity now, however, made her skin crawl.
“Ooh!” Tina cooed and clapped her hands.
“What kind of an errand? Party business, I hope.” Her eyes followed Lyre as he moved to a stone bench and draped himself across it.
“There was a gala just last night,” Olivia reminded her.
Tina giggled. “Of course, but you said yourself that Uncle will have to throw a party or hold a concert every night to keep you close enough for his tastes, and I intend to capitalize on your ‘misfortune.’” Tina’s eyes were alight with the gowns and jewelry she would wear.
“Actually, there is a surprise waiting for Olivia in Uncle’s study,” Lyre said lazily. His sister’s eyes were on Olivia’s reaction, so Lyre took the chance to lick his lips slowly in Olivia’s direction without Tina’s notice.
Olivia wanted to throw her hot tea in his smug face, but that wasn’t how you won the game. She pushed her nausea down and smiled pleasantly. “A surprise? I suppose it is yet another token of his concern for me as I go off to University. Any parent would do the same. Though, I suppose you were never accepted to the University, were you cousin?” Lyre stiffened.
Point for me.
His oily smile faltered for half a moment, and Olivia pushed her advantage. “It all seems like an awful lot of fuss for something that came so easy.”
Two to one.
Lyre moved to a sitting position in one quick movement and leveled his gaze at her. His posture was not a threat, but a promise.
I hope you will check out Phoebe’s book! I cannot wait to get my copy and read it! Until next time…
